About
St. Lucia
Located
in the middle of the Eastern
Caribbean chain of islands, St.
Lucia is volcanic in origin,
dominated by dense jungle, and a
central ridge of forested
mountains. With the Atlantic Ocean
on its eastern shore, the beaches
of the west coast however are exposed to
the calm Caribbean Sea.
The island
is famous for its two towering
volcanic cones on the southwest
coast, the Pitons (Gros Piton and
Petit Piton), which were most
recently named a World Heritage
Site. In fact, in the May
2005 issue of Oprah Winfrey's O Magazine, they were named as one of the "Five Places to
see in Your Lifetime".
With a diversity of offerings, St. Lucia provides two completely different experiences between the north and south of the island, with accommodations that include garden
plantation inns, villas in seaside hills, and luxury resorts and spas. Two of the island’s luxury accommodations boast the 5 Star Diamond Award. St. Lucia also offers two 18-hole golf courses. Strongly influenced by the French through their
occupation of the island, the cuisine is largely a combination of International and Creole utilizing fresh local produce.
St. Lucia offers a range of activities both water and land-based, including
unique opportunities for sea-turtle watching as well as experiencing the
Soufriere volcano, said to be the world's only drive-in volcanic crater, or
dipping in the reputedly therapeutic sulphur springs. The island was ranked
number 4 on Condé Nast's Reader's Travel Awards for Islands for 2004.
