Musings From My Desk ...
Thank you to everyone who sent us feedback on last month’s newsletter feature “Meeting Trend is Giving Back.” Readers, such as Geraldine Gatehouse of Milestones! and TeamsGiveBack, shared with us their own experiences in taking programs and teaming building to another level. We will continue to share similar stories of where others are making a difference in their team-building events.
I will also like to say kudos to Pam and her team at Carib-World Travel for their outstanding job in making a recent program in Antigua highly successful for our event planning clients who for the very first time in a long-standing relationship with their own corporate clients received a commendation letter for the program! In fact, with the official start to summer just around the corner, we invite you to save this date, August 15-18, 2007, as Carib-World Travel, together with sponsoring hotel companies Hermitage Bay and Carlisle Bay, are hosting a 3-night educational trip to Antigua, West Indies.
Qualified incentive planners will enjoy a 2-night stay at the new Hermitage Bay, a resort with just 25 individual, luxury Cottage Suites that have been built into the natural landscape of the hidden bay. The third night will be hosted by Carlisle Bay, an 82-suite contemporary-designed resort and a member of The Leading Small Hotels of the World. With an itinerary that Pam has put together herself, planners will also have the opportunity to experience some of the activities and attractions, and well as world class service, cuisine, and amenities of the largest English-speaking leeward island of the Caribbean. You may contact me or our office for more details as we will be accepting applications through the end of this month.
Of course, with the start of summer also comes the dreaded anticipation of another hurricane season. This month we take a look at some the steps that hoteliers and airline companies have taken to protect customers during the 6-months period.

The Sunshine Guaranteed
Every year many wait with baited breathe to see what the hurricane season has in store. But for the tourism industry in the Caribbean and southern U.S. states, business must go on, and several companies in the past few years have implemented programs to encourage and protect customers traveling to the regions in the summer months.
Marriott International’s Caribbean Travel Interruption Promise helps their guests to reschedule if their stay is interrupted by a hurricane. Among participating hotel are the Jaragua Hotel & Casino in Dominican Republic, St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino and Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort in St. Thomas. Under this promise, according to a May 2007 press release, if a scheduled meeting at a participating resort is interrupted, or the ability to travel to the resort for the meeting is affected, the meeting planner or group will be offered a replacement meeting at the same resort within one year, or the impacted hotel will make every attempt to relocate the group to another comparable Marriott or Renaissance resort. This is all at the discretion of Marriott and subject to availability and other applicable terms and conditions.
Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic has a policy known as its 105% Hurricane Guarantee by which planners or groups may cancel reservations and receive 105% of their deposits if within 48 hours of their scheduled arrival, either a hurricane watch or hurricane warning is issued for La Romana in the Dominican Republic. Their policy also applies if air travel is interrupted by a hurricane watch or hurricane warning in the group’s origination city or on their travel route, affecting their ability to get to Casa de Campo. The 105% guarantee represents a 100% refund plus 5% resort credit on the refunded amount to be used toward a future stay at the resort within one year of their original travel dates. Naturally, cancellation penalties are waived. In turn, if a hurricane watch or hurricane warning is issued for La Romana during the groups’ stay and it is required that the group departs early, they will receive 100% refund of the unused nights plus 5% resort credit on the refunded amount for future use.
For both Casa de Campo and participating hotels in Marriott’s program, the hurricane watch and hurricane warning must be defined by and issued by the US National Weather Service. A hurricane watch is issued for specific coastal areas that hurricane conditions are possible within 36 hours, whereas a hurricane warning issued when hurricane conditions, sustained winds of 74 mph or higher, are expected in a specified coastal area in 24 hours or less.
Hurricane guarantee policies may seem a natural option for the summer months, but SuperClubs in fact takes its guarantee to another level with its Sunshine Guarantee. According to SuperClubs, which includes properties such as Grand Lido Negril, for each and every day the sun does not show during a stay at participating resorts, they will issue a credit voucher equal to that day's Super-Inclusive room value, good for up to one year towards another SuperClubs stay. The determination as to weather or not that is a Sunshine Day is made by each resort’s Water Sports Director.
It is not clear if these guarantees have had any real impact on travel patterns in the Caribbean in the summer, but in a recent survey conducted by TripAdvisor, they found that fifty-five percent of travelers (65 percent of Americans) would travel to a popular hurricane susceptible destination, for a significant savings, compared to 51 percent in 2006.

Newsworthy Tidbits
To ease the backlog, with processing time which is reported to be up to three months instead of a few weeks, the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department have suspended the Western Hemisphere Initiative until the end of September. Travelers who have applied for passports and are returning from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda, will be permitted to use government-issued photo IDs to exit and enter the country until that time. Together with the government-issued photo IDs, travelers must also present official proof from the State Department that their passport applications have been submitted and pending processing.
The Falmouth Historic Town in Jamaica is listed on the World Monuments Fund's "100 Most Endangered Sites" for 2008. The US-based non-profit organization, Falmouth Heritage Renewal has however undertaken efforts to save the cultural and historical heritage of the district characterised by the largest intact collection of Georgian buildings in the entire Caribbean.
This fall American Airlines will launch nonstop service from New York's Kennedy Airport to St. Lucia's Hewanorra Airport. Beginning on November 15, the route will operate three times a week on Thursday/Saturday/Monday through December 13, 2007, and then Thursday/Sunday/Monday. American currently offers daily nonstop service to St. Lucia (Hewanorra) from Miami, while its regional partner, American Eagle, flies five times daily from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Here's a solution to having to travel this summer with two sets of cameras in order to have the waterproof disposable on hand for those outdoor, on the water activities. Pentax now carries a waterproof 7.1 megapixel digital camera which allows photos or movies to be shot in water up to 10 feet deep. Features include a 3x optical zoom, 22 MB of built-in memory and a 2.5" viewing screen.

Cross-Cultural Communication Tips & Comments
Would You Give Your Boss the Finger? Joe Fawcett shares an anecdote on his blog about how a colleague of his experienced a true example of cross cultural differences when he transferred from the US office to their London office. Gestures sometimes have different meanings across cultures, and this is yet another example of how those differences could be interpreted as offensive or embarrassing. In this case, the gesture was the V-sign; not made in the manner that one would make the victory sign with the palm facing outward, but instead with the palm facing the body and jerked upward. In the UK this gesture would pretty much equate to giving someone the middle finger. Yikes!
