Musings From My Desk ...

Last month ECT, our destination partner in the Dominican Republic, won an award for "Most Outstanding Event at an Incentive Program" at the Trophées de l'Événement in France. Developed and managed for incentive house Elebor/EOS, the program for which ECT took this award was a humanitarian teambuilding event for Allergan, a global specialty pharmaceutical and medical device company.

With over 450 participants, Stéphane Satin and his team broke the group down into teams of 30, assigning each color-coded team to different projects ranging from renovation and painting, to gardening and construction of a children's playground in a village not far from Punta Cana. ECT's coordination of the full-day teambuilding started with choosing the right sites for the event, a task on which they worked with the local Episcopal Church, the Rotary and Lions Clubs, and Habitat for Humanity. It also included sourcing tools and materials, and an on-site team of 50 staff members with two red-cross medics on hand. The event was an obvious success for ECT, as well as Elebor/EOS and Allergan, and demonstrates a trend that we continue to see as companies are seeking ways to give back socially and environmentally as part of their programs.

On the side of the environment, The Leading Hotels of the World launched its Green Initiative, encouraging guests to make a conscious decision about traveling green. Enabling guests to make reservations through a dedicated web site, The Leading Hotels of the World is supporting Sustainable Travel International (STI), a not-for-profit organization committed to lessen the toll that travel and tourism takes on the environment and local cultures. Also teaming up with STI is Hotel Mocking Bird Hill in Jamaica. The hotel, which is also in partnership with the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust, is hoping to become a carbon neutral, eco-boutique property by allowing guests to contribute locally and help preserve the Jamaican environment by purchasing trees to offset the emissions produced by their flights to Jamaica.

It is often said that there must be three examples of something for it to be considered a trend. In this case I know that many of you have your own examples of giving back and I hope that you too will share them with others.

Something Extra

Remember the days when we stood in awe of pilots walking through the airport (Leonardo di Caprio took us back briefly in the film Catch Me If You Can). Well, Unica Home has replicated the original Pan Am bag to remind us of the days when we would get playing cards, swizzle sticks, wings from the pilot, and yes, food on our flights.

Cross-Cultural Communication Tips & Comments

Where PDAs are Taboo

No, I am not talking about your handheld personal digital assistants, but rather, your public displays of affection. By now you must have heard about actor Richard Gere landing in hot water in India after kissing the hand and face of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty. In fact, there was a warrant issued for their arrest due to the incident. In several cultures such as Indian and Japanese, kissing is restricted to very close friends and family or simply behind closed doors. Certainly, there are a few other cultures in which kisses are exchanged among business acquaintances once a relationship is established. The handshake however remains the most appropriate form of greeting upon meeting someone. Americans, Germans, and Australians welcome a firm handshake, while the French and Japanese might greet you with a light handshake. Expect your Middle Eastern guests or colleagues to continue shaking your hand throughout the greeting.
